Just not getting masking

From my and other’s experience, Darktable is far from intuitive or easy when compared with PL. It might be free, but you get what you pay for.

And, if you are such a fan, why do you bother coming to PL’s forums?

Not sure about what you say.
Sure Darktable has not denoising capabilities of photolab nor it’s lens corrections.
But for the rest …

I don’t care about Darktable and not a great fan of open source anyway. Either way though I really do not want to see these forums contaminated with a debate about off topic software. As for the issues facing the OP, I might be wrong but it seems a lot of what is wanted is there and howtos are readily available if one takes the time to look. And I note that the OP says “Perhaps I have chosen the wrong software” not I have.

Two things…

  1. I appreciate the suggestion… genuinely.
  2. I am not interested in adding yet another option to the table. If I find, ultimately, that I don’t get on with PL (I’m nowhere near there yet… but I do get frustrated and question my life choices sometimes :stuck_out_tongue:) then I will go with either On1 or C1 (both of which I already own). Capture One would be the fallback as it’s the one Ive used the most in my short lived photography ‘career’.

Again, thanks for posting.

Eigil_Skovgaard displays troll-like behavior on this site. He has posted little or no useful information here about getting the best from PhotoLab. When users are struggling with some aspect of PhotoLab, his agenda is to swoop in and attempt to have them abandon PhotoLab for Darktable. I have never used Darktable and I have no opinion about it one way or the other. But his goal is to be disruptive on this PhotoLab discussion site and push his own software preferences.

“Once you have learned Darktable, you will never spend money on a another raw-editor.”

This wasn’t my experience. I used Darktable for quite a while, and also Lightzone (another free open source RAW editor). For me both of them did the job, but nothing like as easily as PL (or some other products I have used).

I find that for me, PL gives me the best results with the least effort. Each to their own.

To help people get over their regrets with PhotoLab and to offer an alternative. And to praise DxO PureRAW n when possible.

Yes, it could well be that we are aiming for different things, and so we find easiness/shortcomings in different places. The perennial problem for software developers.

Nuanced? That’s a laugh. There’s is absolutely nothing nuanced about your posts. Try looking up the definition of the word. You are free to post anything you want on this forum as long as it doesn’t break any forum rules. Likewise I am free to comment on posts like yours.

I stand by my earlier comments. Your posts do absolutely nothing to help users trying to get the best out of PhotoLab. All you do is cast doubts in their minds about whether they wasted their money as you push them towards other software. That is not nuanced, it is troll-like.

I guess you either did not read or did not understand my previous post. But let me add that in the over 7 seven of being here I have often been very critical of DxO’s products and have suggested ways to improve them.

You, on the other hand, have been extremely negative about Photoab since you arrived and continue to actively try to convince people to ditch it in favor of DarkTable. That is not useful at all. I am not condoning censorship of whatever you decide to post. I am just expressing my opinion that your presence here is unhelpful. Your obvious goal to get PhotoLab users to ditch it in favor of Darktable is troll-like and distracts from this site which is intended to help users understand, and get the best from, DxO products. If you never posted here again I doubt that anyone would miss you.

That this is a forum to debate PL I agree. But it is not a forum to troll and try and use your past experience to influence others. And especially so when we do not know (or care in my opinion) what that experience was. Either way this is a user forum and you apparently are not a user. So, in the words of the poet - go away.

As has been said this is a user to user forum - you are not a user and you are just cluttering up a thread that is asking for technical advice, nothing more. That is all I have to say, after all one should not feed the troll, and especially one that is way off topic.

Not quite right. I am a very satisfied user of DxO PureRAW 4.

This thread turned gross pretty quickly. :frowning:

They don’t usually do that, Tom. This is probably one of the most friendly and helpful forums I have experienced. I too had problems using PL, due to its alternative approach and having been immersed in Lr for years. The guys on here helped me through and I am now comfortable with the software. But, if I have problems I know where to come and would not hesitate. Threads going off topic do annoy though and there is no reason for that to happen.

DarkTable has become less and less ‘useful’ as some of the original core developers have moved on quitting the FOSS politics problems and the remaining devs are less than ‘skilled’. The abandonment/loss of the darktable styles website is another symptom of rot.

A recent branch, Ansel, along with the new-ish workflow manager vkdt are both shaping to to be far better than current-Darktable.

Some have nothing better to do

That is not going to happen. There is no censorship on this site unless DxO determines that a post or poster is so offensive that they must take action. Hijacking a thread is not such an offense.

I have not used PL masking tools a lot but I can compare to LR where smart masking tools are very nice. Selection of sky and objects are so easy that I do local adjustments to most of my images. To think that a few years ago gradient and oval masks were what was available and I thought that was just fine.

Hmmm. But doing so is very discourteous. (… and if I were to need information about Lightroom, I would not seek it here… )
