Well, I just discovered DxO PL does not support HEIC file format. I’d rather not read this entire thread, but it appeared that back in 2019 its support was about to be released. Is that no longer true?
Welcome, Tony! These days DxO rarely telegraphs what it plans to do. Ironically, even Apple seems to be moving away from HEIF / HEIC in favor of the technically superior JPEG XL.
When I got my iPhone, years ago, it produced HEIC pictures : what’s that ???
I soon found that the Mac had a lot of trouble reading these images and that the download time was very long. I quickly gave up on this format too, as there was no hurry to wait. And the next invention of this type will have to wait a little !
But dont expext support for this fast!
…also worth noting that HEIC is basically already a dead format. Jpg XL is the way to go.
On Mac it’s already supported (macOS / iOS) and my guess is that even Apple got that.
Specs-wise, Jpg XL offers so much more and can even be considered as an archival file format for images, and the only format capable of transcoding a JPG: it can losslessly recompress an existing JPG (AKA with no quality loss)…
And it also works with CMYK images, perfect for professional printing environments…
Ian.
I totally support this request.
I would love to be able to export my hard work on developing and editing raw files in a format like HEIC/HEIF that stores more quality of my beautiful photography than the almost 40-year-old JPEG technology can do.
However, sadly, if you look at external support for HEIC it is at 13.5%.
I made a similar feature request just yesterday to add support for AVIF, which is actually higher quality than HEIC, while stilling using the HEIC format as a wrapper.
Even better, it is completely royalty-free, and it already had worldwide support at 93.7%.
Both formats should be added and supported for both reading and exporting by DxO PhotoLab for sure.
