Film Pack does not save image

It doesn’t matter If I open the file directly or by sending it from PL. I apply a preset. And then choose save. The change is not saved. I try ‘save as’ and pick a newly created folder and save specifically to that. Nothing is saved. No file at all. No error message.

This used to work, so I don’t know what has changed.

(I did try to update it, though I don’t think that is the problem but: https://download-center.dxo.com/FilmPack/v7/Win/DxO_FilmPack7.exe is producing “This site cannot be reached”, which is not very encouraging).

Thanks

If you’ve got PL, why are you using sending files to FilmPack? If you have activated Filmapck within PL, all of FilmPacks features are available within PL i.e. you don’t have to send the file anywhere.

Because I want to. (Actually I am testing some issues around applying filters to jpegs and raw files which appear to produce different results. ). Anyway - if you pay for a car it should work even if you can walk to work.

Unless a JPEG has been developed from a RAW in exactly the same way as the RAW you are comparing it against then is it not to be expected that applying a filter will give different end results? Otherwise surely you are not comparing identical files?

Yes. You are quite right. Once I had done my test I learned a) what you say - the difference is accountable by the difference in color spaces and b) that adding a filter in PL and in FilmPack has the same effect. (I generally like to do tests to confirm things).

FilmPack still doesn’t work.

Just tried that.

got in PL 8

confirmed and chose

closed FP 7 and got in PL 8

Could it be that your computer’s security software is blocking FilmPack’s save actions and access to DxO downloads? The download link you provided works for me.

@Wolfgang I once worked in an IT company and the QA guy used to say to us ironically “it works on my machine”.

@Egregius - yes. It is something like this. I didn’t post before but the software also tried to download some “automated corrections” and that fails too.

I subsequently found out that the files are saved - after, literally 5 minutes. My guess is the save process also invokes a download operation and that hangs (like in the image) and then times out after 5 minutes and the file can be saved.

So it looks like all the issues are connected to the issue of connections between my PC and DXO being blocked. Not by my anything on my PC. Possibly by my ISP.

Also - just on the point raised above that all FP functionality is available in PL, unless I am missing something, this doesn’t seem to be remotely true. For example; I can’t see;

the ability to preview filters
the full range of Frames available in FP
some of the customisation settings e.g. the intensity of the effect

The ability to preview filters is the most important. Using the Presets in PL there does not seem, (unless I am missing it), any way just to scroll through them and get a quick preview, before applying them. Unless you know the one you want to apply then (for me) you really need FP.

Update: as per the posts below - you can get a preview in PL.

What you most likely saw was the automated response for …

updating to the latest supported cameras.

The latest version (in Windows) is …

(and barely legible).

Of course, the standalone version works differently (and is easier to handle/control in some respects), but the ability to preview filters (apart from applying the visible presets in the top right corner) is available from PL 8.x onwards …

(finally !).

@Wolfgang Sorry, Wolfgang. Can you explain what you mean by “apart from applying the visible presets in the top right corner”?

Apart from that I understand you saying that PL 8 lets you fully preview a preset (perhaps like this in FP?)

In PL7 with FP7 activated when I click on ‘Apply preset’ (top right of the ‘Customize’ tab) the drop down offers various FP presets:

If I expand any of those FP choices, e.g. ‘DxO FilmPack Color films’ I see previews:

I can’t imagine that PL8 behaves differently.

Does this help?

@stuck - yes it does. I was looking at the Preset set editor in the bottom left.

Yes, the “Apply Preset” option in the top right corner of PL shows the preview(s) similar to FP7, as @stuck just mentioned.

And you are right, the presets in PL’s editor (bottom left) don’t, also not in PL8. There you have to “Apply” (and Undo) …
