I am working on a MacBook Pro running macOS Sequoia with the latest version of DXO PhotoLab 8. I’ve encountered an issue where I am unable to open a file that resides on an APFS-formatted SSD using the “Open With” option in Finder. Although DXO PhotoLab 8 opens, the file doesn’t load, and nothing happens.
Interestingly, when I try to open files from an ExFAT-formatted memory card, everything works as expected. PhotoLab 8 correctly opens the corresponding directory and the file from the memory card.
This leads me to wonder: is this a known issue or an accepted behavior in the macOS community of PhotoLab 8 users? Has anyone else experienced this, or found a workaround? I would appreciate any feedback or insights from others who have encountered similar behavior.
Works as expected on my 2020 M1 MacBook Air running macOS Sequoia version 15.3.2, no matter whether the file is on the boot volume or a separate volume, both APFS.
Works as expected with files on an APFS volume on an external Samsung T5 SSD.
Doesn’t work when I try with a file in the respective folder in a Time Machine backup. Both folders have the same access rights, but DPL does NOT expand in the DPL browser sidebar) the Time Machine backup volume with its special access rights.
Please check the access rights of your external drive and folders
On my test Mac with many volumes running different versions of macOS, rights look as follows:

The Time Machine volume is not connected. Even though it has the same owner/group numbers, the extended attributes are different. I suppose that DPL is dealing with them to refuse access to the volume.
Thanks, in Privacy & Security in the Files and Folders Section or in the Full Disk access section the PhotoLab 8 is not listed. That looks strange to me. Maybe I should delete and reinstall PL8 to see if it appears in one of these lists. As the PL7 appears in the Files and Folders list.
Friends, thanks for all your good tips. I gave it full access and it did not work. I was too much focused on the APFS but that is not the issue. I used an older Harddisk with an APFS file system and that worked fine. Another T7 Shield 2 TB SSD worked fine as well. So it seems an isolated issue with my two T7 1TB drives. I will try to reformat them but need space to unload the data first. I will keep you posted how it turned out. Thank you anyway for your feedback and kind support.
…and a reliable way to copy the files too.
So far, I’ve used CarbonCopyCloner and set it to verify the copies. It takes some extra time though. But what’s a little extra time vs. reliable transport? No big deal imo.
My experience and opinion, CCC does not pay me anything!
