Hi, total beginner question; in the Photo Library view the grid of photos in the lower part of the screen shows the photos in the selected folder. One of the filenames has a red background. What is the significance of the red background?

You have somehow applied a colour label to the image, possibly in another app. Right-click on the thumbnail to get the menu where you can remove it if you want to.
