DXO PhotoLab missing features about filtering and masking

Hello,

I am using Photolab for quite some months now and there are few features missing that I would love to see coming. Please let me know if something similar or very similar already exist, I might have missed something.

1) More filtering options

To find out specific photos and to help showing the “duplicates” having good filter option is quite useful, I was looking for the following and couldn’t do it :

  • Lense & Body (checkboxes for each if possible, else a select for each)
  • ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed (range)
  • Focal Lenght, Focus Distance (range)
  • Dominant Color (Black, Dark, Green, Blue, Yellow, Red)

2) Multiple folders selection (and bonus with recursive folder)

Sometimes I would like to find out all my 5 stars in the past year or something like that, at the moment I would need to select all my folders which is not ideal.
Maybe something as simple as if I hold CTRL both folders are looked at ?

3) “Faster” filtering at least for some criterias

Correct me if I am wrong but it seems that you fully “miniature load” the photos before filtering them, that doesn’t seem the most efficient.
If I want (with the 2. feature) to find all my 5 stars, I don’t expect to fully load thousands of pictures.

4) Masks visibility improvements

  • Hide specific mask infos (areas or point) without changing its effect (useful when you are done with this mask)
  • Hide completely all masks infos (areas or points) without changing their effects (useful to confirm the global behavior once done with masking)
  • Different colors per “mask” (useful to confirm which areas are for which masks)

5) New “auto” masking

This one is much more complex to add and therefore might not be relevant if others do not ask for it but having something that auto detect subject (a bit like what Capture One has) with an additional feature of "how flexible it is when trying to auto detect the subject (allowing to go from a bird feather to the bird itself for example) would be very appreciated.

Thanks for reading through this long post, happy to discuss about it !
I am pretty sure that those would convince more people from switching from LightRoom or Capture One to DXO.

Hello, Thomas … Responding to a couple of your points;

For the first two of your expectations (Lens & Body + ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed) … Instead of filtering, try Sorting instead; which includes all of those criteria).

It’s NOT recommended practice to point PhotoLab at a folder containing 1000s of images, because it will be VERY slow to complete the process of rendering them all (according to either previous corrections or for presets applied to newly encountered images).

Hello John,

Thanks for your reply.

For the first two of your expectations (Lens & Body + ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed ) … Instead of filtering, try Sorting instead; which includes all of those criteria).

Yes, I am using this for now but it’s not always ideal to not have a simple filter (especially lense + body)

It’s NOT recommended practice to point PhotoLab at a folder containing 1000s of images, because it will be VERY slow to complete the process of rendering them all (according to either previous corrections or for presets applied to newly encountered images).

That’s exactly my point, if you were to not “render” all of them but only those you are asking for, it could be VERY fast.

Hang on. John doesn’t work for DxO, these are user fora. You need to address DxO’s support directly.

I wrote my own keywording browser app for Mac, which is perfectly capable of browsing and searching multiple thousands of images, in a flattened hierarchy. So, it is possible but, apparently, DxO do not consider it a priority.

Yes, I am a also a dev, I know that it can be very fast if needed (and shouldn’t take that long to implement).
Sorry if I sounded aggressive or rude ; it wasn’t my intention. I was just trying to point out that the “recommendations” and “usage limitations” are part of the issues I am raising.

You need to address DxO’s support directly.

Sorry, I might have misunderstood, because this is part of the domain “dxo.com” I thought it was the best way to communicate with their support, there is another recommended way ?

To communicate directly with DxO support use the link below. The link is in US English, but you can change it to your preferred language. Although DxO staff still monitors this site and occasionally posts here, they unfortunately stopped providing us with regular communication some time ago.

For the first three, go to the search bar and enter, for example, “100”, PL will show “ISO 100”, “Focal length 100”, etc…

Yes but cant say “Show me all those with ISO higher than XXX which I would consider most likely bad quality”
