There’s an upgrade offer on PL9 but it’s $99.99 discounted from $119.99 so not a huge discount, but a reduction nonetheless. Filmpack 7 to 8 upgrade is a $10 saving on the full upgrade price.
The full version with the price reduced by $20 is the “upgrade”. There is no smaller upgrade package. If you are running the trial edition, you can simply unlock the license by paying for the upgrade.
thanks I paid for PL8 full. on the EURO site the upgrade is euro 99.99
Perhaps that is reduced but it does not indicate it is.
Whatever the case; too much for me.
I don’t know if this is new or I am just noticing it, but I do not see any mention of editions of PhotoLab. Have they finally done away with the pointless Essential Edition?
Do you guys think the current live black friday deal is worth for getting both PL + FP together now? Or wait for a PL + FP bundle deal?
Was hoping for better black friday deal… still on the fence ![]()
PhotoLab 9 Essential exists, but since they are not making it easy to find, I am guessing there won’t be a PhotoLab 10 Essential. I wouldn’t recommend the Essential edition to anyone.

I am tempted to wait. Here in the UK that bundle was £20 cheaper the day before the Black Friday deals were released. They may do a cheaper bundle again after 2nd December (when their BF deals finish)
This is the first time I won’t be updating.
These are not good Black Friday deals this year.
I’ve updated every version since version 1. Up to version 6, the update price for the Elite version was €69. From version 7 onwards, it has risen steadily to €100. I had also planned to purchase FilmPack, but the high price of €240 for the PL update and FP is putting me off.
WTF - Black Friday “deal” for a new PL9 license is only $40 off from $239.99 - I remember it used to be around 50%.
I was going to buy it but not for that crappy discount ![]()
Yes, the Black Friday upgrade price has increased over the past few years. It has increased from €49 to €69 to €89 to the recent price of €99.99.
As a FilmPack and ViewPoint owner, which are crucial parts of PhotoLab, I would also like a combo upgrade price.
Today’s pricing policy makes me think that a monthly fee for DxO software pack would ultimately be cheaper.
Don’t give them ideas! ![]()
Although upgrading isn’t compulsory, it’s already essentially necessary if you want to stay on top of further development and feature polish (like the better functioning auto-brush only available to PL9 onwards).
If their current approach to pricing is any indication, a subscription model wouldn’t be less than Adobe’s - it’d be more.
Maybe you’re right. I didn’t know the payment price for the DxO subscription. In the end, when I finally found out, I will praise Adobe for the affordable subscription.
From this time forward, I will keep quiet and take your advice! ![]()
They can’t win. If it was cheaper, people would still cry out “SUBSCRIPTION!” and lose their minds at the prospect of… a better deal. If they don’t, then it’s just too expensive.
They could keep their prices the same and ignore inflation, but where’s the future in that?
In the end, they cannot please everybody and also stay in business.

When version 2 was released, the update was €69? According to New Zealand’s economy, it would be €89 today on inflation alone. Then we need to consider the cost of training AI models, plus the ever-increasing suite of features that need maintaining.
Sure, the Black Friday deals aren’t as good this year. Perhaps that is down to the number of people who have openly stated in this very forum that they weren’t going to purchase until now.
I think the big problem here is communication. There’s a wall between DxO and “us”.
There’s no messages from (them) along the lines of:
- “We know price rises aren’t popular but…” …or…
- “We’re well aware some of you are struggling with the latest version of PhotoLab, especially AI masking and performance issues. Please rest assured this is our top priority and while we don’t have an ETA for you yet, a free update is in the works to rectify these issues”.
There’s nothing to show they’re listening, or that they care.
I’m not looking for a warm hug and a glass of milk here… this is customer service 101. They’re not even trying to explain themselves and so we’re left to think:
- “Oh, prices have gone up. That’s bad.”
- “Oh, no Black Friday bundles. That’s bad.”
- “Oh, AI masking results in crashes. That’s bad.”
- “Oh, performance is terrible. That’s bad.”
…and there’s no sign of a light at the end of the tunnel. No hope.
Fair point. I suspect maybe they see the hand wringing that goes on in this forum and don’t want to stick their heads above the parapet. But… that’s both avoiding the problem and also how they got here in the first place.
