Adding multiple areas to AI mask

Just upgraded to PL9 and I’m watching a few tutorial videos. On one, it shows the AI object selection clicking on multiple areas and they are added to the same selection.

When I try the same thing, it adds each selection as a separate mask - not even a sub mask. I can add multiple selections to the same mask by clicking ‘add sub mask’ each time.

I notice that the video is on Mac and I’m on Windows - is it just a difference in behaviour for each OS?

Try “shift+click” to see if that does what you expect. (Adds a sub mask)

Also, “alt+click should be a negative sub mask (subtract).

Brilliant - thank you!!

I was using CTRL-Click as that’s a typical method for many apps.

Oddly though, when using Control Points, the default is to keep adding as you click - you have to make a conscious effort to create additional masks.

On Control Points “clicks….

If any type sub mask is active, other than a CP sub mask (highlighted sub mask label), a simple CP “click” creates a completely new mask with a CP sub mask.

If the active sub mask is a CP, then a simple CP “click” adds a new CP point to the active CP sub mask.

Using “shift-Click” creates a new CP sub mask regardless of the type sub mask active. This new submask can have different luma/chroma/diffusions sliders than any other CP submasks, so useful within a single mask and need to target different areas.

Using “Alt-click” / “Opt-click” creates a negative CP within the active CP sub mask or any other active mask.

If a mask is highlighted (not an individual sub mask) then the default tool switches to whichever type mask is at the bottom of the sub mask stack. If the base mask type is CP, then the click adds to the most recent CP sub mask. if the base type is not a CP than a simple CP click creates a completely new mask.

CAUTION! If the CP “mode” is switched to a Negative CP then the Shift and Alt-Opt key actions are reversed. The mode status carries over between images (does not reset to a default). It does reset to a positive CP when closing PL9. (at least on my Mac running PL 9.2)

These actions seem to make sense, but only with trial-error practice.
