I take a lot of photos of moving cars (e.g. rallies, sprints) and like to show that there is motion by using a slow shutter speed to blur the background, but getting the car sharp when it is travelling at speed, especially on bumpy ground, with say a 1/100th is very difficult and impossible if not perfectly side on unless some distance away with a lot of zoom. Hence, to use a 1/2000th and then select the background and add linear blur, then select the wheels/tyres and add radial blur would really help. Thanks.
You need a pixel editor to do such manipulations.
How do you think PL does demosaicing and deep prime noise reduction? This is at a pixel level. I think this notion of something being a pixel editor or not a pixel editor is somewhat outdated. Every edit is changing the colour and brightness of pixels, one way or another. And don’t forget, PL works on RAW files and needs RAW files for deep prime.
Big difference is that PL only applies pixel changes on export, not on the original file.
PL is primarily a raw file processor. What you want (I understand this very well) is a subsequent change to the captured image and that is only possible in a pixel editor… which PL is not.
For example, such a change would be possible if the developed image is exported and then edited in a multi-layer pixel editor.
- Either you use PL for development and export for another application (e.g. Affinity Photo, PhotoShop)
- or you are looking for a software that can do what you are looking for/need. – You already mentioned ON1.
.
Note: This is not about “shooting” it down. Currently it is simply not possible.
You can do it with Nik Collection, Analog Efex.
" Motion Blur
Create motion, distortion, or texture in the image to make it appear as if the camera or subject is moving. Use multiple vector points to customize the appearance of the desired movement."
Thanks for suggesting this, as I was not aware of this feature. Unfortunately the blur tool does not do what I want. I can draw a circle around a wheel and add rotational blur, but it blurs everything outside the wheel! Not much use really. As for the motion blur, this would need to be selective, i.e. I would select everything outside of the car (i.e. background) and motion blur it, but that is not possible. However, I have learnt more about Nik Collection so thanks again for the suggestion, but it would be good if Photolab could do these things.
I have to disagree. This pixel editor stuff, in my view, is somewhat from the past from when processing power was far less than it is now. This is what is said on the On1 Photo Raw website: "Combine multiple photos into a single, non-destructive layered photo. Each layer can have its own non-destructive editing settings, allowing you to layer RAW photos and reprocess them anytime. ".
I am sure DXO could implement it if they wanted, it is simply a matter of where they see their product compared to others, plus the cost/time in implementing it.
Hi Phil,
what you quoted from ON1… have you tried that yet?
I have a copy of ON1 PR 2024. You can develop the raw file, use effects (like motion blur), add layers and store it as non-destructive .ONPhoto …
but in the end you have to export it into something commonly readable.
Hello Wolfgang,
My version of On1 is 2019 and I stopped using it because it was so unstable and would lose edits. I went back to try as you suggested and as you say, it has the motion blurs, but no sooner had I used the AI select tool (which I found impressive when I used to use On1 4yrs ago), it crashed! I really liked the On1 concept with layers, being different to PShop, but the instability just drove me mad. I also have an old ACDSee, similar to PShop in its layering concepts. Then I found PLab and enjoyed its approach to editing (though at times would like a better masking tool) and because use of layers is not something I would do that often, stuck with it. Now at PL7. Unlikely to go to PL8 as not much in the way of improvements for me. Another reason for using PLab is its great noise reduction.
Hi Phil,
maybe you like to check for Affinity Photo 2.
For a test, I (even) used the raw engine to develop, saved as a linked/embedded file (it’s also meant to be non-destructive … and saved as “.afphoto”), copied/added the result as a layer and called the built-in motion blur filter. … to get a hint that the layer has been automatically rasterized! I then applied the effect with an appropriate mask.
greetings, Wolfgang
Many thanks, certainly worth a look, given its price. I do have access to PS and can do the blurs in there, but I do find it very heavy going. PS is clearly incredibly powerful, but as I do not need to use it very much it is often a struggle each time I go to use it. If Affinity is easier to pick up then worth a try.
