9.0.2 released for Windows/PC

Testing now but tbh on my i7 5070Ti rig the 9.0 was actually OK

As usual its frustrating to have no information as to what is meant to be fixed but left up to us to try to find out

Welcome to the new enhanced, involuntary, unrewarded beta test programme

May be if you spot a fix you get a reward? Could be even 2 if it was actually meant to be a fix not just another accidental bit of programing. The install went OK on one PC but very flaky on the laptop. Stalled on checking for space and had to use task manager to close it. After a reboot installed but very slow in doing so.

Today 17 sept version 9.02 was released.

I added a lots of predefined AI-presets like Animal, Vehicle etc. and even a Control Line for the sky and exported and it worked!! This did not work before in the tests I have been doing yesterday.

So I urge users that have some time to test to use specifically the predefined AI-masks and export and print. A you can see my test did not crash and I managed to export too. The export time of my two test pictures are about the same as with using the free hoovering masking method - 37 sec for one full and one in 4K in 100% quality. The reexport was a lot faster and was 14 sec for these two pictures.

If we are lucky the problem will besolved now. Still it has to be tested even with the last version of the Nvidia driver - even for the older RTX-cards

I tried also with the 581.29 driver with my 3060 Ti card and that still crashes. So, it looks like we still have to use 572.83. It is far more stable as it is now.

AI masks work fine so far

Photolab 9.0.2 built 68
Nvidia studio driver 581.29
GeForce RTX4050 laptop and 32 GB RAM.

I did some more testing

When I use the AI auto detect functions I get an error message. The selection with sky, subject, background, people animals…

When use AI and select manually by pointing on the sky it works fine. Like AI select in Capture One.

Also copying the auto mask to an slightly offset handheld image worked.

so much the better for you.
for my part this version 9.02 has changed absolutely nothing… its plant still…

Win11 and rtx 3060

No update notice when starting PL 9.0.1 on a Mac yet

9.02 is not working on my computer, crashing with the Internal screw up message.

I uninstalled 6.02 and reinstalled 6.01. Everything OK again even with the same photos and edits that crashed 9.02

As I reported in my post (PL9 on older computers) 9.01 runs well on this unit.
(28gb i5-8400 CPU GTX 1060 WINDFORCE OC 6GB, Driver 560.94)
(PL9 on older computers)

PL 9.02 gives me a very significant performance improvement on my Windows 10 machine over the original version 9.0.

I was able to apply 2 different AI masks as well as a few other local and global adjustments. The AI mask selectivity was much faster with 9.02 and the export time using my RTX 4060 with the older 572.83 driver was 7 seconds for DP 3 and 9 seconds for XD2s. When I tried using 3 AI masks the export failed, but still this version is a surprising major performance improvement for me. Hopefully performance will be further improved in the near future.

In 9.0.2 HEIC isn’t loading much quicker BUT its not re rendering all the time in the small batch I processed today. That for me is a big improvement all it needs is for them to load initially as fast as RAW

Halleluja! Agree! The difference between earlier versions is nothing but stunning. No matter if I pick a premade AI-mask or apply it on free hand it is instant. I have hard to see any differences in performance between the two main different ways to apply AI-masks now and that is an amazing development compared to earlier versions. Before it took 2-3 seconds to add a predefined AI-mask and often it crashed too. Now it is instant and totally stable.

It is like to use Capture One - it is as fast now.

I have tried also to apply masks from a template picture saved to an AI-preset but that was still hit and miss and far inferior to what I´m used to from Capture One. I guess that is the next step. It might work with animals well separated from other animals but it doesn´t with for example a bunch of wilderbeasts or elephants but that might be to ask for to much.

I haven´t even had any problems using instant updates even with RAW-files with Deep Prime 3 activated. It could cause problems earlier. It takes about a second before a high resolution picture even with Deep Prime rendering activated is refreshed. I can easily live with that since using the loupe takes far more time to use and this feature doesn´t impact the speed of scrolling at all. Infact I had some problems in PictureLibrary View sometimes in version 8 with pictures that took ages to refresh. Version 9 does not have that issue at all what I can see.

So thanks DXO for addressing all these issues. It has helped a lot. Finally version 9 got really useful as it was meant to be I suppose…

Wonderful! Hey - if that’s what a very minor update release brings, what will version 9.1 be like?

By the time I’m able to try PL9 (October or November, when I expect work to settle down), it’s possible that it will have advanced quite a bit.

I still get internal error when using AI Mask presets (animals, background etc). After that error the only way to clear it is to restart PL9 :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Other AI Masking functions work well for me.

I believe this is a DxO error and have a bug report outstanding.

EDIT: This also happens when I select CPU in preferences, so definately a DxO error.

Do you still have problems after the upgrade Keith?
I haven´t.
Which GPU-card do you have and what driver do you use?

Nicolas I did another thing too yesterday besides upgrade to 9.0.2…
I even tested that with the latest driver for 3060 Ti.
It might be a slight difference between 3060 Ti and 3060.
When it did not work properly I reinstalled 572.83 again.
So I have a refreshed driverinstallation too.

A Chat GPT 5 vs-summary: 3060 seems to have a little inferior performance despite having more VRAM onboard.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti are both part of NVIDIA’s RTX 30-series lineup (Ampere architecture), but there are some key differences in performance, specs, and price. Here’s a breakdown:

Feature RTX 3060 RTX 3060 Ti
GPU Architecture Ampere (GA106) Ampere (GA104 – same chip as RTX 3070, but cut-down)
CUDA Cores 3,584 4,864
Base / Boost Clock ~1.32 / 1.78 GHz ~1.41 / 1.67 GHz
VRAM 12GB GDDR6 8GB GDDR6
Memory Bus 192-bit 256-bit
Memory Bandwidth ~360 GB/s ~448 GB/s
Power Draw (TDP) ~170W ~200W
Typical Gaming Performance Great for 1080p & entry-level 1440p Strong 1440p & capable 4K at medium settings
Ray Tracing & DLSS Supported Supported (better performance thanks to more CUDA cores)
Price (MSRP) Lower (~$329 at launch) Higher (~$399 at launch)

Key Differences:

  • Performance: The 3060 Ti is significantly faster — roughly 20–30% better performance in most games.
  • VRAM: The 3060 actually has more VRAM (12GB vs 8GB), but the Ti has a wider memory bus and higher bandwidth, making it faster overall.
  • Target Resolution: 3060 is best for 1080p/1440p gaming, while the 3060 Ti is better suited for 1440p high-refresh or even light 4K gaming.
  • Price: The 3060 is cheaper, making it more budget-friendly, but the Ti gives much better value per frame if you can afford it.

@Stenis but I am afraid you looking at the processor performance and I believe the current problems are with the somewhat haphazard way that PL9 is handling the AI modules that need to be loaded into the GPU memory for AI masking and then for AI exporting.

Testing on my 5600G, which was then equipped with a 2060(6GB) GPU, was pretty much a disaster with PL900 so the 3060(12GB) was moved to the 5600G from my 5900X and I managed to get a 5060Ti(16GB) for a good price to replace the 3060(12GB) in the 5900X.

This is a run that I just did on the 5900X with the 5060Ti(16GB) after a reboot onto an earlier NVidia driver using one of @Allan’s images.

PL902 went straight into the correct Folder and I exported just the first image and I got this

8529MB of GPU memory used but I have seen higher GPU memory usage with both PL901 and PL902, so far as high as 12778MB. Whether having a 16GB GPU simply gives more space which PL9 feels it can “consume” haphazardly I am not sure.

But if anyone is able to buy a new GPU card, i.e. laptop users have a bigger problem, then I would suggest that they do what I did and buy a card with at least 12GB and preferably 16GB and/or wait until DxO have resolved the “excessive” use of GPU memory or when they spot a GPU with a larger memory at a “good” price.

Also see my post at PL9 on older computers - #20 by BHAYT for more details of runs with PL902 earlier today.

No Bryan, I´m not talking CPU at all.

" the Ti has a wider memory bus and higher bandwidth, making it faster overall. "

I truely have not had the slightest problem since I upgraded to PL 9.0.2. with 572.83.
No matter what I do, I haven´t seen the slightest problemn so far and it is far faster when using the premade AI-masking tools too.

I have no problems with using it in production now.
The upgrade yesterday to PL 9.0.2. made a huge difference for me.
Sorry to read it didn´t for others.

I really love the new AI-tools as they work and integrate now even with the older Local Adjustment tools.

The only differens to version 8 is that it takes longer to export pictures containing AI-masks but that is just to be expected.
Pictures without AI-masks are often exported faster than with XD2s and version 8.
… and as I wrote earlier, gone is even the problem I had in PictureLibrary in PL 8 when pictures often did not get displayed at all - it just displayed grey empty frames.

No one knows what will happen in the future with real life system requirements demands. Personally I´m fine for now but it still looks that PL 9 has increased the demands and just by accident exposed a week spot in the present user bases present computer equipment. That might be a real problem for DXO if people feel they get forced to spend a lot of money not just on Photolab 9 but also on new hardware. That might force people to go elsewhere if DXO doesn´t manage to optimize Photolab 9 so it can be run on the same hardware as Photolab 8.

@Stenis, 9.0.2 gives the same problem as 9.0.1. I run on a Laptop with a NVIDIA RTX GPU with the latest studio drivers. I am not prepared to downgrade the drivers as they are more important for DaVinci Resolve than PL9 at this stage. I can accomplish everything with PL8 or PL9 as long as I don’t use the AI auto mask function that causes the issues.
