The view from the bed

I’ve been trying to shoot squalor with a dash of fine-art-ish aesthetics. Honestly, Photolab requires self-control not to go overboard with all the different kinds of contrast.

That’s my question, really – are there any noticeably harsh/unnatural tonal transions in this?

Well, adequate color reproduction is always subjective.

If you used the “DxO Style – Natural” preset, try “DxO Standard” or “Neutral Colors” instead and see if you like it better.

Sounds kind of mutually exclusive to me but I suppose the view is of squalor while the bright colour of the bag and the richness of the tone of the floor give it a fine-art-ish feel.

How about this as an alternative interpretation:

That’s better as a stark representation of the squalor, but… It’s the color tonality that originally caught my eye, I saw beauty there. B&W is what I’d do if I was after more of a reportage feel.

I’m trying to make these spaces somewhat pretty, in their own way.
