I can agree with one part of your statement and that is that there are third party applications to use that does tethering really well BUT it is more than that and it is about the workflows and the possibility the advanced bidirectional control a good tethering software gives. So it is not as easy as Joanna seems to believe in her example - it is how it is done too. Sad to say it seems like Capture One is pretty lonely there in their ambition to really offer extremely smart and effective workflow solutions both for wedding-, studio- and product-photographers. I don´t know why this is but as I see it it is fact. That is the reason why efficiency aware photographers prefer just Capture One over Lightroom and everything else.
You can all study all these different tools and solutions in action that contributes to empower the users using these tools: Samlingssida för överblick:
In order to discuss efficiency in workflows in a little wider sense (which tethering is part of) I think we have to consider where the front line is today.
If you take some time to really look through these videos (it is OK with “fast forward” just to get an over view) I´m sure at least some of you might realize that it is A LOT of this that´s just not there in Lightroom both when it comes to Layers & Masks, Smart Style Brusches to all these more specialized workflow tools.
It is true Capture One is pretty expensive BUT if you take into consideration the productivity impact it can give on a professional photographers workflows or for that matter even time concious entusiasts, it is not all that much on the margin seen on a period of say a year.
Photolab is still my base for more than 95% of my postprocessing work but I have found that I even need Capture One because there is a lot of things Photolab either just can´t do or does in such an inefficient way that I just can´t motivate me to expose myself too that. I think it is sad too see that it is so low to the cieling here and so difficult even discussing this here at DXO Forums without some people immediately starting to digg their treches. I think this forum needs some wide open windows and a little fresh air. When did DXO Forum cease to be the learning community I remember it once was??
Hiya, I wasn’t intentionally bashing the suggestion of adding tethering.
However, I was trying to explain why implementing such a request isn’t as straight forward as some people percieve - maybe I explained my thoughts in a poor manner.
A number of times I’ve seen something along the lines of ‘how hard can it be to implement feature ‘x’’. It’s sadly not that simple for any feature addition.
I do agree with you that it would be great if this forum’s community showed more positivity for ideas/requests from users. We all have varying needs and wishes, and a solution that works for one person may well not be suitable for another and that is fine. My camera has a load of video functions that I never use, but I appreciate that the video functions are used by a lot of people and have widened its appeal to more users. By bringing in more users, rather than increase the price, the video functions may have kept the price of the camera lower.
I support a number of feature requests (including this one) even if I don’t need the feature myself

Me too and I have supported DXO and Photolab for more than 10 years because I want it to continue to evolve, develop and EXIST, despite I’m not satisfied at all with what their R&D has been able to deliver the last three years. I feel sad when I see what other smaller (even a one man company like Photools) manages to deliver). So it is not only about that DXO also necessarily needs the billions of Adobe to support the small number of developers at DXO R&D to get something done. In the end it always boils down to dedication, skills and brilliance and that is really what is missing. Photools seems to have that but DXO has looked really tired the last years and seem not to get all that much out of their hands. And it is just silent as in a grave here when it comes to their participation.
I think they really have to improve their dialog with their userbase. If I look at what Photools do I can see that their userdialog often have a direct impact on the development of that software and that give and take has going on as intensively as to day for 25 years. The result is just amazing.
Not to get off topic, but I can’t remember the last time I used a tripod as DeepPrime allows me to use a higher ISO with a higher shutter speed and handhold in low-light situations. I consider a tripod a niche item now which is useful for deliberately taking photos that require a slower shutter speed.
