Random virtual copies of photos

I seem to have gained loads of random virtual copies of images in huge folders. Not every photo though. I am trying to clean up the confusion and would be really helpful to be able to filter on say copy #1 and unedited so I can then delete.

There is a sort on copy no but between master and copy #1 it didn’t appear to work.

Welcome to the DxO USER forum, Alan …

That’s because this sort-option was “broken” by DxO themselves, when they implemented the (REALLY ANNOYING) feature of auto-Stack-creation for members of Virtual Copies.

To allow the sort-by-VC-number feature to work as expected;

  • Select all images (Ctrl+A on a PC)

  • Right-click and then click on the option for Stacking

  • Then click the option to Remove Stack

You’ll then see all VCs gathered in true VC-number order - allowing you to delete all except the (M)aster version.

Thank you. That was indeed it. I never even thought of looking under stacking. Now have deleted all the copies. It would also be nice if you could link from a copy to underlying master but I couldn’t find how to do that either.

@afrb2

In the context of a virtual copy (VC), the original file is displayed as the master (M).

( M = as shot || VC1 = edited version )

You can add as many virtual instances as you like. Because they are virtual, they require very little additional storage space, but are only visible in PhotoLab. To use the edited version (VC1 in my example), I export it as a JPEG or TIFF.

PhotoLab works non-destructively. It does not modify the file you are working on, but saves the changes in its database and the dop sidecar file (if enabled).

.

After the virtual copies are deleted, PhotoLab will only display the originals.
What do you mean by … ?

It would also be nice if you could link from a copy to underlying master but I couldn’t find how to do that either.

If I am looking at a virtual copy and say want to copy adjustments, I’d like there to be a link that took me to the master from which the image was made so I could paste them onto that prior to deleting the virtual copies.

May I suggest to download the pdf-user guide for Photolab 9.
It’s much easier there to search & find all about Virtual Copies.

e.g.

The virtual copy (in my example VC1) is placed next to the “master” file, when sorted by name.

To copy all the adjustments onto the master, click on the menu or use the hotkeys.

Simply experiment to get a feeling for the app. :slight_smile:
