PL10: Is GPU absolutely needed for denoise?

I’m thinking of using PhotoLab 10 simply for its superior AI-based de-noising capability. But I use Linux. Thankfully I have a Windows 10 VM on my laptop! And, my laptop has an Iris XE GPU. I know, it’s nowhere near the capability of the two Arc Pro B70’s I have in my AI rig, but it’s something. But I don’t think I can pass through the Iris XE GPU to my Windows VM because it’s the primary GPU that is used to display everything on the screen. How terribly would PhotoLab perform in its de-noising capability by just using the CPU?

Welcome to the forum @JoshuaPK

Given the configuration of your system, I propose you test PL 10. The 30-day free trial should give you plenty of insight if you prepare well before starting the trial.

  • assemble a folder with duplicates of photos with a wide variety of properties.
  • look through the manual and list the features you want to test.
  • for denoising, there are parameters that can influence outcome drastically.
  • etc.

Systematic testing helps, as well as using virtual copies, e.g. to find what a denoising slider does at position 0, 10, 20…

And last but not least, you can also trial PureRAW. It’s trial period is shorter though.

It will be sloooow. The only way to know whether or not its performance is acceptable to you is to run the trial.

NB, if the only features of PhotoLab you intend to use are the denoising and lens corrections then PureRAW might be a better option for your needs. Again, run the trial to find out which application best suits your workflow.

I have tried running Photolab 9 on a VM in the past. The laptop is powerful both CPU and GPU wise but it was too sluggish to continue using.

Consider running the trial as others have suggested, but I think it probably won’t be good enough for you.
