Minimalist

Out of interest, to start the New Year, how about a thread that starts from nothing - or, at least the minimum?

To start with, from me, two versions of the same image…

This is a geothermally-heated pool, so steam helps to remove the background.

Dutch or plattdeutsch or mixed ? I can’t decide.

I can understand the first line as dutch/platt (Egidius, wo bist Du geblieben ? / Egidius, où étais-tu ?). I can understand the second line as something like “platt” (Mir langt’s nach Dir, mein Geselle - Je m’ennuie de toi, compagnon).

I have a problem with “coors” on the third line. You (coors) the death, you left me life.

Not a word Dutch. A German dialect.

Well, I managed to find a translation into Dutch…

… and then into English…

Egidius, where have you gone?
I long for you, my friend.
You chose death, you let me live

Eagidius, where have you gone?

I miss you so much, my comrade.

You chose death, let me live.

The Eagidius hymn (Brugge ca 1400)

George, sorry. it is old Dutch (ca. 1400)

After a bit of cogitation and discussion, I was wondering if it might be better to leave more fine detail in the rope, rather than what looks like a lino cut…

Opinions welcome.
