It seems your numbers as a percentage of users on this forum is low. This forum’s user base is also, I would imagine, a low percentage of total PhotoLab users. There is every chance that the number of people DxO would lose (or not gain) due to lack of Linux support is such a tiny number that it’s not even worth them considering.
I wonder how many of the linux users (I do use it on occasion for certain things) would be willing to pay the extra premium to develop for linux.
So if they developed a version for linux but it was £600 because the user base is so small but the cost of development and support was the same, would they pay for it, I very much doubt it.
I have to admit this is why I went down the apple route because it has supported software without all the microshaft adverts and demand for you to sign upto everything web. If more of the companies did linux then I would jump ship, but that will never happen for several reasons I can see. Games and lots of general software will have to be available and fully supported on linux. Plus you will then have to get the distro’s to decide on a standard for things like software installs, looks etc or the standard user will not move over as its to complicated.
There is a middle ground here: develop the next version of Windows apps using WINE-friendly libraries - so at least there was a decent possibility of it working properly in Linux. DxO appears to be a French company; as I understand it, the French government has shifted to Linux, probably because of those same data concerns.
Yes, that increases both development and QA costs but it means that if, say, orange donald tries to grab Greenland and Europe reacts (which IMO they should) then DxO has something to sell that’s not connected with any US company. Without getting into that whole political can of worms other than to say that I’m a combination of appalled and embarrassed and that there are some of us here working out asses off and donating all we can afford to take that ability away from the Executive Branch.
If do you really have highly sensitive data that absolutely MUST be private and unreachable by anyone but yourself the solution is quite simple. Do not keep it on any network connected device and use strong disk encryption and password protection. Use a second system for running things like PL or other day to day things.
