When opening the crop tool, it always starts with the setting “original ratio”. How can I set it to default to 3x2?
change it to 3x2 and save it as a custom preset then make it you default preset
Is your camera capturing images in the 3:2 ratio ?
- If so then that is the “original ratio”.
Are you able to describe the necessary steps. I was unable to figure it out.
I know. But I have a new camera. And that one records in the ugly 4x3 ratio. So, I have to crop every image. Having 3x2 as a default instead of “Original ratio”, I could ease that job a little bit.
btw. even when dialing in 3x2 in that camera, the resulting raw is 4x3.
OK - In that case, follow @FarmerPhotos’ advice above.
Yes, the in-camera crop applies only to resulting JPGs.
By capturing 4:3 you can choose which part of the image (in vertical sense) that you wish to crop to 3:2.

To demonstrate I just took an images from another user …
with → original aspect ratio 4:3
with → cropping 3:2
You may like to save it as a custom preset.
@avalon is requesting help in doing so …
When cropping through a preset you don’t have control of what part is cropped out.
George
True - but the 3:2 crop ratio will be auto-selected … avoiding need to make that change
- Can just hit “R” and proceed with crop adjustment.
Here are instructions, hope they help.
You may have to add the “Preset Editor” palette to your sidebar (Menu item “Palettes” → “Preset Editor”)
Zeb’s instructions will give you a Preset you can apply manually … Another approach (as suggested by @FarmerPhotos) would be to create your own customised preset that’s auto-applied to all newly encountered images.
Here’s how to do that;
1) Firstly, some background …
-
Open your Preferences settings … via menu Edit\Preferences
-
Note the “Auto-apply Presets” listed … these are preset(s) you will be replacing
2) Steps to create your custom preset, with 3:2 as default cropping ratio
-
Use PL to open an image that it has never seen before … This is important because if it’s an image that’s already registered in PL’s database then you may have changed status of correction settings from those originally applied by auto-preset.
-
Open the crop tool (press the “R” key, for Windows) and change the crop ratio as required … then press Close to save that setting.
-
Go to menu item Image… and select the “New preset from image settings” option - and save your settings (now with crop ratio 3 x 2) with your custom name; say, MyCustomPreset (or, whatever).
-
Open your Preferences settings (as above), and replace the “Auto-apply Preset” listed there with the name of your new custom preset.
That’s it - the default crop ratio applied to all newly encountered image will now be 3:2. You could have also changed any other settings you wish to have auto-applied to each newly encountered image.
Note that the framing of this auto-applied crop will be arbitrary … You should still enter crop-mode to ensure it has been applied to the “correct” part of the 4:3 original.
I’m on PL9 Elite, the latest patch, but I don’t have Edit\Preference
or … do you mean Settings from the main menu, General, Auto-apply Presets - “RAW images” and “RGB images” ?
Location of preferences/settings differs between Windows (what John is using) & Mac, but what you described should be what he’s referring to.
You appear to be using a Mac…

In the preset editor, you can create a new group, for example:
“0 – Your Name”
and save your custom preset in this group.
You can then apply it manually to the desired images
OR
to all (newly detected) images by enabling this custom preset in the preferences.
You have a partial control though. If you choose ‘Manual’ the crop will start with upper top, when set to ‘Auto’, it will cover the middle of the longer side.
Personally, I often crop my 3:2 event images to 4:3. Although I have a partial preset for that, I think I’ve never used it. In practice I’ve always preferred to select a subset of images and then apply aspect ratio, whether 4:3 or 5:4. Just saves few boring clicks.
My 4x3 crop preset (9.7/Win):
Preset = {
Settings = {
Base = {
CropRect = {
0,
0,
1,
1,
}
,
CropRatio = 1.33333337,
CropAuto = true,
CropActive = true,
}
,
Overrides = {
}
,
Version = "20.6",
}
,
Version = "11.0",
}
You may change ‘CropActive’ and ‘CropAuto’ to suite your purpose.
I guess, AutoCrop shouldn’t be an issue. I configured the camera to only show me the preview at 3x2 in the viewfinder, but the camera records the full sensor data. That means, I compose the image based on the the 3x2 crop in the viewfinder. When PL now crops out what doesn’t fit into the middle, I’m fine with that because those parts weren’t meant to be in the frame anyway.
