Blurring and contracting image with Control Point adjustments

Hello all -

I’ve been a long time user of Nikon NX and later NX2 since 2004 which was developed by Nik Software and featured Control Points.

Two years ago I started with PL5 and then upgraded to PL6, running them on macOS Ventura both on M1 and M2. What still bothers me to the extent that I don’t use PL much and did not upgrade to PL7 is that whenever I use a control point or attempt to tweak a slider the entire image blurs and contracts momentarily. I want to see how the tweak affected the image without going through an intermediary phase of blur. NX2 never does this.

I am hoping there is something I’m not doing correctly or a there is a setting I have not been aware of that can bypass this blurring phase which to me looks like a flaw.

In the display tab of preferences select the Preview quality check box. This could slow the rendering of the preview a bit with older computers.

I’ve never seen this “blur thing” in PL6 (Windows),

but in PL7 i can no more adjust the color or b&w selection mask in realtime

  • when pulling the outer CP circle while over the pic
  • when pulling the → Chroma or Luma slider while at the RHS

Instead i have to release the mouse button to control the selection,
press the mouse button again to adjust,
release … , press again … very annoying & making it impossible to work smoothly

( no idea, how that is on MacOS ).

Thank you, Mark.

After check marking the Preview quality option blurring stopped but after adding two local adjustments with masks, I got an Execution failed message and had to close the image I was working on. No adjustments were saved after reopening the file.

Perhaps in Windows version the Preview Quality option is check marked by default which I presume the way it should have been for Mac version too.

I use a Wacom tablet instead of a mouse, and I’m not using PL7 but I can imagine that such odd behavior of sliders can be very annoying. An essential factor in my workflow is to see the effect of a particular edit I do without having to move focus away from that section of image being edited even momentarily.

Yes – and PL6 is much more reactive, while grabbing/adjusting the short sliders from the EQ with the tablet’s stylus isn’t as optimal.
