We edit our images in small batches, we need a deselect hotkey, like in lightroom, so we can go on to reselecting a new batch.

You mean deselect all images in the Filmstrip or deselect the actual tool parameter focus ?

AFAIK there is always at least one image that's selected and you can't have none. When you finished editing a selection you just need to select the next batch and it deselects the previous one.
