Intended change in ViewPoint 3?
« on: April 26, 2017, 03:39:24 am »
Running ViewPoint 3 as a standalone in Windows 10...

When adjusting a TIF file and using Auto under Distortion, VP3 asks to open the original image as previously in version 2. However, the dialog that opens recognizes only JPG and TIF files, not the raw files containing the original image information.

Is that the intended behavior?

Same behavior here. Probably a bug.

By the way, I have already suggested a simpler way to manage this : see http://forum.dxo.com/index.php/topic,10083.msg56709.html#msg56709 . A DxO rep told me it was a good idea but nothing has been done about that.

OldRadioGuy,

It's a bug. But you can select RAW files by entering *.* (or *.xxx, xxx being the filename extension of your RAW files) in the "File Name" field. The RAW files will then appear.

Confirmed.

Now what about the suggestion I made more than 2 years ago in the thread mentioned above ? From a programming point of view, implementing this feature is easy. Since getting the metadata from the original file is that important for ViewPoint, it seems that implementing a more sophisticated mechanism in order to access the original file is needed. The current one is rather simplistic.

1. It's easy to allow the user to specify in the Preferences, in which folder the original file can be found. Most of the time, it's the same folder as the target file or a folder relative to that folder.

2. It's easy to allow the user to specify a list of filename extensions for the RAW files it uses (e.g. "cr2;raf;nef".

3. Most of the time, the original file will have the same name as the target file.

4. It's easy to trigger an automatic search based on this information. Only if the search fails should VP asks for the original file location. If the search result is the wrong file, the user should be able to click on a button and proceed as usual (that is, as currently implemented).

My two cents.
