DXO not recognizing manual focus Samyang lenses
« on: January 21, 2016, 03:08:12 pm »
Hi all,

Apologies if there was another topic on this, I used the search function but couldn't find anything.

I have a Canon 6D and was excited to see that DXO added a distortion correction profile for the 6D and Samyang 14mm f/2.8 lens yesterday.

As the Samyang is a manual focus lens, no lens information is sent to the RAW file's EXIF during shooting, and so DXO Optics is not adding the correction. I've tried to play with the EXIF information using both ExifTool and ExifPilot (including lens name, focal length, Fnumber, and aperture fields) but DXO still doesn't recognize the file.

Any advice or tips on what else I could try?

David

Hi David,

After discussing your message with our lab team, we'd love it if you could send our way one image on which you did not modify the Exif, and one on which you did: this will enable us to run some tests and see if we can propose a procedure to follow for you to try out. You can send your files via email at scjeannin@dxo.com.

Kind regards

Aha! I've had the same problem with a Samyang 8mm fish-eye on my Sony A58 but didn't understand the EXIF problem. Advice on how to handle this would be wonderful.

Hello,

is it possible to have solution from DXO team ? I have sayang 14mm manual for canon, this combination is supported according to the duo website, so it will be very interesting to have support how to modify exif in order to use the sayang modules.
Thanks,

Best regards,
Olivier

I "believe" that some of the earlier model Samyang lenses won't work properly with DxO but that the later ones work just fine. Do you have any idea if your lens is an "early" or "late" model?

I am having this problem too and would appreciate guidance from DxO.

BTW: Adobe Camera Raw now supports the same lens and it works perfectly.

I had the same problems, with no practical help from the DxO support. I have a  fully manual Samyang 14mm, Canon mount, with no chip glued,.
I have found the exact sequence of tags and values for Exiftool in order to modify the exif for any CR2 image.
Eventually, the DxO module is cheated, and the image is fully corrected.
I include two JPEG images, obtained converting the same original CR2 file, but without and with exiftool correction.
If someone is interested I can post the exiftool exact syntax of the needed additional tags.

Hi sselci,

I'm interesting about the correction details. You can place here the parameters' name and the new values. If you prefer, through private message to me you can limit the visibility.
In the blue headline in this page select the MY MESSAGES / Send A Message option and write to Bencsi ( or any other member in this forum ).

Thanks in advance

Hi Endre,

This is the sequence of args, to be issued within a command terminal with administrator privileges. I have tested only the Windows version of exiftool:

exiftool  -Lens="Samyang 14mm F2.8 IF ED UMC AE Aspherical" -LensModel="Samyang 14mm F2.8 IF ED UMC AE Aspherical" -FocalLength="14" -FNumber="14" -MaxFocalLength="14" -MaxApertureValue="2.8" -MinApertureValue="22" -TargetAperture="2.8" -LensType="Samyang 14mm F2.8" -m -overwrite_original_in_place YourFile.CR2

This way does not make any file backup, so make a preliminary copy if you wish to preserve the original version. Maybe some tags can be omitted without compromising the result, when I have time I'll make further tests.
I have also prepared a Windows GUI that makes the operation easier for choosing the disk, the directory and the file. When ready I'll find a way to distribute it someway.

I hope that this correction can be useful to many.
Have fun.
S.

Thanks sselci,

I will try to use the direct DOS prompt command to do it.

Hi guys.

I just have installed DXO 11 ... and what have surprissed me is that I have found Samyang 8mm 3.5 Fisheye on this list:

http://www.dxo.com/us/photography/dxo-viewpoint/features/distortion-correction

Screen of my selection:
https://gyazo.com/4777ea813fd5dbf36bcae89e3575c343

AND I can't get the module for this Samyang in the DxO 11 ...
There's no such Samyang model to download ... .it's not recognized in the application either ...

Can we do something about that?

Thank you sselci !

Your set of commands worked perfectly.

I used your EXIF Gui in the "direct" mode
to update/correct the images to 14mm Samyang.

Its fun to see DXO fix the huge abberations automatically
when the correct EXIF data is in the image.

Sadly, the exif Gui didn't work on my 64 bit system.
So I have to copy the images to a 32 bit system,
fix the exif data then copy them back.

Nevertheless - Thank you for the hours of work you spent helping us fix the problem.

Wish DXO had a way to let us pick a correction lens
or camera module from a drop down list.

Cheers !
